Today started with the usual visit to the Patisserie for my daily ritual of amusing the lovely lady behind the counter with my Frenglish. Every day she teaches me the word for apple turnover and the next day I end up pointing, much to her amusement. Off we then went to Terrason for market day. The market in this medieval town meanders across the river and through several streets with the usual wares including rustic food. Several counters selling live animals that will probably be potted by sunrise and offers of local goat’s cheese met with our uniform non merci beaucoup.
Next we headed to the famous caves of Lascaux II. The original caves of Lascaux I were discovered in 1940 by 4 local lads who rescued their dog from a hole and noticed it went further. Returning a couple of days later they explored further and discovered a cave containing paintings of animals created 17000 years ago. Unlike today’s youth they did not add moustaches and other unmentionable symbols, but told a local teacher and the rest is history. Unfortunately in 1963 the body heat and breath (I’ll not make a comment about garlic) of visitors was having an impact on the paintings and the cave was closed. However a replica cave was created over a period of 11 years and is identical in detail. Was a really interesting visit.
We then returned to gite and as Karla relaxed in her sun-trap in the garden, Renata joined us with a bottle of red and a bottle of homemade walnut wine. The latter was fantastic and tasted like a fine port with a delicate nutty aroma and taste. We traded gifts with a box of shortbread being given to our hostess. If I had not been dining out this evening, the walnut wine would be history as would this update.
I returned to the restaurant in Hautefort where we had lunch yesterday and consumed the rest of my duck. Duck rillette salad to start followed by confit of duck leg in a black truffle/mustard sauce with shavings of black truffle.
Then back to the gite to take Kiera to Mr Magoriums Magical Emporium – the barn in the garden. It is as if Larry and Renata were given 6 hours in a toy shop to load as much as they could and then return to place them in this barn. It is fantactic as well as enjoying a quiet glass of wine and smashing my beautiful wife at table tennis on a daily basis, it has everything any kid or grown up kid could wish for and every day we discover something new.
My Tom Tom sat nav system appears at times to morph into my WII and suddenly diverts us down Super Mario style routes with hairpin turns on country roads, fortunately no banana skins or exploding cowpats yet.
Hope all well and thanks for the comments.
Bonne Nuit
